In August 2023, the Lahaina wildfire devastated parts of Maui, leaving behind widespread destruction. In the aftermath, a collaborative effort between a team of drone service providers, land surveyors, and cutting-edge software technologists was pivotal in assessing the damage and supporting recovery efforts. The team utilized LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, along with advanced reality capture techniques, to create highly accurate 3D models of the fire-affected areas. The LIDAR data, captured from drones, provided high-resolution point clouds that precisely mapped the landscape and the damage, including buildings, infrastructure, and vegetation. This reality capture approach allowed for a detailed and scalable 3D representation of the affected regions, offering valuable insights into the extent of the destruction. These 3D models helped identify critical infrastructure needs, assess property damage, and understand environmental impacts in ways that traditional methods could not. The detailed data was then delivered to the Hawaii government, who used it to inform recovery strategies, prioritize rebuilding efforts, and source materials efficiently. By combining LIDAR technology with reality capture and 3D data, this partnership empowered a faster, more informed response to the crisis. This session will explore how these advanced technologies and collaborative efforts can transform disaster response and recovery, providing a roadmap for resilience in the face of natural disasters.
